The U.S.-Japan Economic Harmonization Initiative

Launched in November 2010, the U.S.-Japan Economic Harmonization Initiative (EHI) is a new bilateral Initiative that aims to contribute to our countries’ economic growth by promoting cooperation to harmonize approaches that facilitate trade, address business climate and individual issues, and advance coordination on regional issues of common interest.

Both Governments will meet over a period of several months, beginning with a first round of working-level meetings in February 2011. Outcomes resulting from this Initiative will then be compiled by both Governments and made public.

The two Governments will discuss a wide range of issues under the following four agenda themes: (1) promoting further U.S.-Japan cooperation in the economic field; (2) discussing ways to facilitate trade and address business climate and other individual issues; (3) collaborating on regional and global challenges; and (4) exchanging updates on trade and economic-related policies of the United States and Japan.
