Major investment sectors included finance and insurance ($54.5 billion); manufacturing ($23.3 billion); holding companies ($7.9 billion); wholesale trade ($7.2 billion); information ($6.2 billion), depository institutions ($4.4 billion), and professional, scientific, and technical services ($2.9 billion).
Japanese direct investment in the United States reached a cumulative value (historical-cost basis) of $289.5 billion in 2011. Major investment sectors included wholesale trade ($103.2 billion); manufacturing ($82.7 billion); depository institutions ($35.0 billion); finance and insurance ($22.1 billion); information ($9.9 billion); professional, scientific, and technical services ($8.6 billion); real estate and rental and leasing ($6.3 billion); and retail trade ($4.8 billion).
