Japanese direct investment in the United States reached a cumulative value (historical-cost basis) of $257.3 billion in 2010. Major investment sectors included wholesale trade ($104.0 billion); manufacturing ($80.7 billion); finance and insurance ($19.3 billion); depository institutions ($13.5 billion); information ($9.0 billion); professional, scientific, and technical services ($7.5 billion); real estate and rental and leasing ($5.6 billion); and retail trade ($4.3 billion).
