Major investment sectors included finance and insurance ($28.0 billion); manufacturing ($17.4 billion); wholesale trade ($9.0 billion); holding companies ($5.9 billion); information ($5.6 billion), and professional, scientific, and technical services ($2.8 billion).
Japanese direct investment in the United States reached a cumulative value (historical-cost basis) of $259.6 billion in 2008. Major investment sectors included wholesale trade ($108.3 billion), manufacturing ($87.0 billion), finance and insurance ($21.7 billion), depository institutions ($10.3 billion), real estate and rental and leasing ($6.9 billion), and retail trade ($6.1 billion).
